Now in its 11th year, Armed Forces Day provides a welcome morale boost for past and present service men and women and their families.
The annual Armed Forces Day celebrations take place over the weekend of Saturday, 29 June with hundreds of events arranged nationwide ranging from tea parties and craft tents to parades with marching bands.
Each year the main national event takes place in a different town. Next year it will be in Scarborough, but this year is Salisbury’s turn. Salisbury has an exciting weekend planned with a programme including a three-day music festival, free barbecue, air show, military parade and demonstration, and a firework finale.
One of our military links, which we’re very excited about, is this year’s RootsTech conference taking place at the end of October in London. We’ll write about it again, nearer the time, but RootsTech is a world-leading family history and genealogy organisation and, in association with the Ministry of Defence, will provide the technology for members of the public to search for the armed forces links and records within their families.
Another link to the military comes through our hardened aircraft shelters (HAS) at Upper Heyford, an ex-Cold War air base in Oxfordshire, which we have adapted for our customers’ use. These bomb-, pest-, fire- and flood-proof HAS are where we now store irreplaceable heritage items on behalf of museums, art galleries and collections from all over the country. We like the fact that some of the HAS still have graffiti left behind by the airmen, spray-painted signage, and fighter jet flying schedules on blackboards on the walls, and we have left them in place as a reminder of the service people who were based there.
Let us know if you’d like a tour of Upper Heyford for its history, or if you’d like to find out more details about our super-secure, BS/EN16893-standard heritage storage facilities. Just call us on 0333 060 3082.
