The coronation of their majesties, King Charles III and Queen Camilla, on 6 May, 2023

You are invited…

The coronation of their majesties, King Charles III and Queen Camilla, on 6 May, 2023

So, have you received your royal invitation yet?!

It’s a beautiful piece of art, painted in watercolour and gouache and embellished with symbolic flora and fauna, both real and mythical, from across the British Isles. The 2,000 or so invitations are produced on recycled card and, at time of writing, should be dropping onto doormats across communities around the world right about now.

Of course, the King has a long track record in sustainability. Ranging from activities such as addressing the Cop26 Climate Change summit in Glasgow in 2021, to participating in the Queen’s Green Canopy initiative, to re-using bathwater from Clarence House to water the gardens there, to any number of patronages of wildlife, farming, and environmental organisations – he has been well immersed in this area and will continue to champion the environment while on the throne.

A ’low carbon’ coronation

As well as reports circulating in the media that overseas dignitaries are being asked to use commercial flights – if they are attending at all – the introduction of new banknotes and stamps featuring the King’s image is to be implemented in such a way as to reduce the ‘environmental and financial impact’ of the changes. In the past, stamps have been pulped at the end of their shelf life. This time around, stamps bearing the likeness of Queen Elizabeth are still in use and will be until stocks are exhausted.

In a nod towards the value of community, the third day of coronation celebrations – Monday, 8 May – is Big Help Out Day, being promoted as an opportunity for the whole population to engage with volunteering – what it is, why it’s needed, who can take part, and where. It aims to get many millions of volunteering days in the bag, and raise awareness, for all the organisations taking part – something we can all get behind.

Overall, it’s fair to say, this coronation will be a more consciously ‘ESG’ type of royal event, something many progressive businesses will recognise as setting a good example.

A swathe of local authorities, for instance, are following suit, in setting their residents the challenge of ‘going green’ with any celebrations planned. Gloucestershire County Council has a whole section named ‘Greener Coronation’, for instance, with a downloadable app, and hints and tips sheets for hosting sustainable street parties – including planning, food, costumes, decorations and, naturally, how to recycle all the waste.

How Restore Datashred can help

We are a major recycler – of paper, plastics, textiles and digital assets – and we are proud to contribute to a lower carbon economy and society. Shredding then recycling paper, for instance, enables us to conserve the planet’s trees and their habitats more holistically, reduces emissions from manufacture or from going into landfill, and costs up to 60% less energy than producing virgin materials. It’s better for the environment, for resources and better for all our consciences &ndash
